How and when did you two get into photography?

Cam: I've been taking photos non-stop since I was about 14. I burnt through so much 35mm in those days of cheap 1 Hour developing and it got even worse when I started traveling.

Kim: I always loved having a way to document memories. I was given a film camera as a child and would go around taking terrible photos that I still cherish today. When I met Cam, he was so gifted at lining up, lighting and taking photos, and I tried to learn everything I could. He taught me so much.

Some Black & White Beach Photos look like they were made in the late 50's, early 60's. Do you have a special connection to that era?

Cam: For sure! That was a real age of cultural invention in the West. Things were new, new forms of rebellion were everywhere, surfing and skateboarding were still confined to an adventurous few. I love the style, the innovation and deep down, I really have a thing for cause and effect - finding out how things came to be. Much of what we enjoy today sprang forth from the excess time and disposable income that was new to that age. It’s so easy for me to embrace the music, the fashion, the vehicles and the style that the era had to offer.

Kim: That is definitely Cam’s favorite era! There is something about the 50’s and 60’s that feels a little magical though, especially in photos and old movies. A lot of my favorite movies were filmed in the 50’s and 60’s, with amazing actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, and other powerhouse women who were so sexy, but in such a contrast to today’s version of ‘sexy’. I think that’s what we are both trying to capture in those black and white photos.

Analogue Summer (@analogue_Summer) is your Instagram feed and the name fits perfectly fine. Will there ever be an Analogue Winter?

Kim: Hahaha! Great question! Well, having spent nearly 30 years in the frozen wastelands of what are the Canadian Prairies, I think I can safely say that we have done our time in ‘Winter’. Now that we live in such a temperate and stunningly beautiful part of Canada (we get snow maybe 1-2 days a year), we are permanently celebrating summer!

Cam: I’m afraid Analogue Winter is for someone else. Since moving to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, we no longer even know what Winter is. The coastal temperate rainforest keeps it warmer than the rest of Canada and I’m fine with surfing through the Winter.

What is older, your camera or your boards?

Cam: Funny enough, they’re mostly the same age but none of them date back to the early 60’s. We’ve got an array of film Cameras, mostly Canon or Polaroid from the early 90’s. We also use a few Lomo toy cameras and thrift-store cameras, because over-exposed and out of focus adds a special, authentic touch. Our Surfboard collection is from the last twenty years. Almost all of them are 60’s style Longboards and over 9’ long. Apart from our iPhones and discount airfare, Kim and I could live in the 60’s.

Kim: In contrast to Cam, I have only 1 board, a beautiful Walden Wahine with sparkles in the rails and a gorgeous Hawaiian print inlaid on the deck. She is 8 feet and lovely. She’s been with me for 12 or 13 years now. My Lomo Sprocket Rocket is just a couple of years old, and that is largely what I shoot on (although Cam has a wide collection of old and new cameras that I also use). So in this battle, the board wins!

Is there anything, anybody or any place left on your bucket list that you have yet to take a picture of?

Cam: Photography fuels our adventures and adventures fuel our photography. Our list of adventures is pretty long. I’d really dig a trip to Turkey for some Hot Air Balloon time! The Middle East and North Africa is also calling my name these days, I’d love to relive some of my past adventures in Morocco and Egypt, but this time with Kim.

Kim: Oh my, yes! The thing about traveling and shooting photos is that it just continually opens your eyes to more places you want to go, more experiences you want to be a part of, and more subjects/settings/angles you want to shoot from! So, yes, the list of places I want to travel to and document is long (and just getting longer!). A couple of years ago we got certified for diving, and since then I’ve become something of an underwater addict. Back in the late 90’s, I bought Cam an underwater dive housing and 35mm camera, and although it’s getting old and dated now, we took it out surfing one day last summer and had a lot of fun! I would love to try doing some underwater film shooting in a lovely tropical locale!

And last, but not least, is there anything that you want the world to know?

Cam: As modern humans, we spend far too many days and way too much energy creating free time, and then we just waste it. Make your free time count for something. Get out there and create!

Kim: In our world of social media and picture-perfect images, it’s easy to forget that behind every beautiful image or every perfect picture is a heck of a lot of work and lining up light and angles, and shots that don’t turn out. Don’t compare yourself to what you see on Instagram. Just shoot for the joy of it and the satisfaction that it brings you.

Kim: Also in the stacks of boxes in our house (and our friend’s houses) where we have years worth of photos that pre-dated Instagram. You can certainly see more of our photos there…
