First of all, may you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, all! I’m Nicholas Bailey, also known as Nick Says Go! I’m a photographer, blogger, do-it-aller based in Brooklyn, NY. Born and raised in Virginia, I originally found my love of photography 14 years ago and I’ve been rocking since then. I switched to film from digital seven months ago and haven’t looked back since.
Congratulations to your own photo book! Please tell us more about “90 DAYS IN NYC”
90 DAYS IN NYC was my visual answer to the question “how were your first 90 days in New York?” In 90 DAYS IN NYC, I wanted to highlight the two main neighborhoods within Brooklyn where I spent most of my first three months as a NYC resident – Bed Stuy and Crown Heights. All of the photos in the book are 35mm film shots taken on two of my vintage cameras. I’m also a writer by nature, but when you’re talking about a city as beautiful as NYC, being able to visually share my perspective just hits a little bit harder.
What or who influenced your style the most and why are you focused on photographing people?
When we talk about photography influences, there’s none greater than Gordon Parks to me. He’s one of the greatest photographers of all time, and with him being a Black man as well? Man, the inspiration is crazy. He had a special way of capturing the most intimate moments in a way that combined him being present, but also as if people didn’t even notice he was there. There’s a certain level of comfort and trust required to get those sorts of shots. He’s also one of the main reasons I focus on people as much as I can. No two people are alike. People are ever-changing subjects. We’re doing 1000 different things in our day and it changes by the minute. To me, there’s nothing better than capturing the perfect, intimate moment between people. I want those moments to live forever.
What cameras do you use preferably?
All of my photos are taken with a vintage Pentax k1000 35mm camera with a 50mm lens. I’ve had a few backup point & shoots in my time as well, but I always found myself going right back to the k1000. There’s something so special about being able to control every single setting to get the shot you want.
What do you wish, where the development in photography goes?
I’m a big fan of the old school analog world, but I’m also a tech nerd deep in my heart. I’d love to see more ways we can bridge the gap between the old and the new with photography, especially film photography.
Is there anything, anybody or anyplace on your bucket list you have to take a picture from?
Man, one day, I’d love to be able to take studio portraits of my family. Surprisingly, we don’t have family photos anywhere and I’d love for me to be the one to set up and take professional photos for us all together – especially my parents together. Outside of that, the architecture in Copenhagen and Oslo has been on my radar.
Would you like to tell us more about your upcoming projects?
Absolutely! Coming soon, I’ll be offering my first run of limited edition, high quality prints available for sale. I’m also working on my second photography book, which will be 100% focused around people and emotions. I’m really excited about this one.
Where can we see more of your photographs?
If you’re on Instagram, be sure to follow me at @nicksaysgo. I also have a few portfolio categories up on my website, over on NICKSAYSGO.com.
And last but not least, is there anything you want the world to know?
Everything is bigger than self. Remember that, do good to others, make people comfortable, and just spread some love when you can.
Thank you Nick for taking the time for this interview. It is a pleasure for us! We wish you all the best and are looking forward to your further projects!
